Birmingham based gay professionals network Out of Office, which has been bringing LGBT spirit to some the city’s best business bars for the past five years has launched a new series of events with retailers.

Out of Office was created to provide the opportunity for people to meet and network away from the gay scene, which is particularly attractive for those who are new to the region with few or no business contacts. The informal group meets in a different bar every couple of months and over the years has facilitated friendships and business.

Event organiser Clive Reeves said: “For a while we’ve been talking about doing something different alongside the regular get-togethers. We’ve had invitations from venues and businesses around the city and after considerable thought, have come up with what we think is an exciting start to an extra-curricular OoO calendar.

“We’ve got drinking fairly well covered, so now it’s time to tackle those other LGBT essentials - shopping, dressing up and eating.”

The first free event is an evening with independent jewellers Rex Johnson and Sons on Thursday 25 May at their store on Corporation Street. Birmingham is at the heart of Britain’s jewellery trade and the Rex Johnson team are some of the best experts in the business.

Clive said: “Think Antiques Roadshow meets Cash in the Attic with bling and you’d be wrong. This is much more sophisticated, but because their stock is pre-loved, there are so many bargains to be found.

“For our event we suggested they concentrate on watches because who wouldn’t want a half price genuine Rolex or something by Jaeger‑LeCoultre? But if gold or diamonds are more your thing, they have those too.”

Two generations of the Johnson family and their team will be on hand to chat about what to look for in pre-owned jewellery and also what to avoid. They’ll also be able to do valuations and appraisals of your own pieces, because they buy as well as sell.

For the Out of Office crowd they’re providing fizz, canapes and a discount.

Tickets are free but limited. They can be found on Eventbrite. The usual bi-monthly Out of Office will be taking place in June.
