Birmingham LGBT has been awarded a contract to deliver a new city-wide campaign aimed at increasing the visibility of LGBT people over the age of fifty, tackling ageism and highlighting the rich lived experiences of older LGBT people.

“Ageing with Pride” puts the focus squarely on LGBT people over the age of 50. The campaign which is to run over the next 12 months celebrates older people and draws upon the frequently unique experiences members of this community have faced, including being criminalized due to their sexuality, and the AIDS pandemic.

“Ageing with Pride” aims to dismantle ageism by increasing visibility and sharing the stories of this generation. The campaign will launch in August and continue through to July 2019.

Campaign Manager, Rico Johnson-Sinclair, spoke to Zone to say, “We think it’s an extremely important campaign with the capacity to really make a difference in Birmingham. If you’re a dedicated individual with a passion for equality and community, then we want to hear from you!”

Birmingham LGBT are recruiting a small team of volunteers from across Birmingham, acting as ambassadors for the campaign to help spread the message and get involved in activity on the ground. Whether that be getting involved with the campaign launch and other relevant events, interventions, or visiting care homes and nursing homes to deliver the message that people over 50 years old are not alone.

Talking about the volunteer positions Rico commented, “The positions offer a unique opportunity to meet and work with a wide range of people from across the city. No particular experience is required, though we would love to hear from people from a variety of age ranges but especially those over 50.

Together, we hope to work to bridge the gap, motivate people to continue the journey and most importantly, inspiring LGBT people 50 years and older, to keep their rainbow.”

The time commitment asked from you as an ambassador is about 2 days (16 hours) a month.

If this is something that you think you would like to be involved in please email Rico Johnson-Sinclair at RicoJohnson@BLGBT.org or call Birmingham LGBT on 0121 643 0821 and ask for Rico Johnson-Sinclair
