Since a successful legal challenge back in 2012, by transgender model Jenna Talackova, the Miss Universe pageant has been accepting of transgender models. Six years later Angela Ponce has become the first transgender model to win Miss Universe Spain.

The 26-year-old model was crowned at the finale in Tarragona after seeing off the challenge of 22 fellow contestants. “I am very happy with what all this means,” Ponce said after her crowning on June 29, adding, “I want to give a lesson to the world of tolerance and respect towards oneself and towards others.”

Ponce will represent Spain later this year at the worldwide Miss Universe event which takes place in the Philippines.
