US President Donald Trump has said that transgender people cannot serve in ‘any capacity’ in the military.

It comes after the Obama administration last year decided to allow trans people to serve openly. However, in June, Defence Secretary James Mattis agreed to a 6 month delay in recruiting trans people.

Trump, in a number of tweets, said: "After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.

"Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail."

The US military ban on openly gay and lesbian servicemen and women - known as ‘Don't ask don't tell’ - was lifted in 2011.
